THE AIM OF THIS BODY OF WORK IS TO BRING FORTH A DEEPER AND NUANCED UNDERSTANDING OF HONG KONG/ CHINESE CULTURE

INTO A FASHION SPACE THAT IS BUILT ON A WESTERN FRAMEWORK. IT’S PURPOSE IS TO OPEN CONVERSATION ABOUT CHINESE DESIGN,

AND ALTERNATE FORMS OF FASHION, BY INVESTIGATING INTO HONG KONG/ CHINESE HERITAGE, HISTORY, MODERNITY AND VERNACULAR

IDENTITY, AND BRINGING IT INTO CONTEMPORARY TIMES. BY PULLING ON MY OWN CULTURAL ROOTS, I AM ABLE TO DESIGN FROM AN

HONEST, AND RESPECTABLE VIEWPOINT TO DE-ORIENTALISE FASHION. THIS BODY OF WORK SEEKS TO BREED INNOVATION THAT IS

INDIGENOUS TO ONE’S CULTURE TO NURTURE INTEREST AND VALUE WITHIN A GLOBAL SOCIETY INTELLECTUALLY, AESTHETICALLY, AND

RESPECTFULLY. ACCORDING TO THE JAPANESE ARTIST SHINICHIRO YOSHIDA, HE SAID “THERE’S NO MEANING TO YOUR WORK WITHOUT THE

CONTEXT TO YOUR ROOTS.” THIS LED TO THE REALISATION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING ONE’S ROOTS, AND HOW THIS LEADS INTO DESIGN

THAT IS TRUE TO ONE’S PERSONAL IDENTITY. THIS COLLECTION AIMS TO GIVE A VOICE TO ASIAN DESIGNERS, TO ENCOURAGE CULTURAL

RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING IN FASHION, AND IT IS A LOVE LETTER TO HONG KONG, MY HOME.

PROCESS WORK

The 1920s German Expressionism movement gave birth to the first vampire film to grace the big screen; Nosferatu by F.W. Murnau.

Drawing inspiration from the haunting imagery, and the role of the unlikely protagonist Ellen, the clothes are an expression of

suppressed sexual desire and feminine power. The hazy ambiguity of Ellen’s role is seen where she sacrifices herself to save the

town, but also seems to be succumbing to her erotic desire. Along with looking and deconstructing lingerie and nightgowns fr-

om the 1920s, the pieces created have a romantic yet an occult darkness to it that expresses female power and seduction.

RENAISSANCE MAN (2016)

LOOK 1 - ALL GARMENTS: R.SONG / ACCESSORIES: DANIELLE KARLIKOFF / SHOES: RAF SIMONS X ADIDAS

LOOKING AT MARNI AS THE BASE FOR THIS MENSWEAR PROJECT, I’VE DECIDED TO LOOK AT MARNI’S ITALIAN ROOTS,

AND TO FOCUS ON THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE. AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE MIDDLE AGES AND EUROPEAN MODERNISM, IT

HAS PRODUCED THE “RENAISSANCE MAN,” A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. USING THIS TROPE PROVIDED A MUSE THAT IS EDU-

CATED, SOPHISTICATED, AND IS ONE WITH NATURE. THE SYMBOLISM OF THE DAFFODIL HAS BEEN USED THROUGH YELLOW

DETAILING OF THE GARMENTS, AS IT REPRESENTS “REBIRTH,” WHICH IS WHAT RENAISSANCE MEANS IN FRENCH. THE IDEA,

DERIVED FROM FLORA, IS AN ODE TO MARNI’S PERVASIVE USE OF COLOUR AND FLORAL PRINT. VELCRO TABS ARE ALSO USED

TO IMPLY A SENSE OF PLAY AND WONDER.
